Nate Hitchcock
Writer | Speaker | Philosopher | Spiritual Explorer
Hi There!
My name is Nate Hitchcock and I am a recovering workaholic turned WRITER, SPEAKER, PHILOSOPHER & SPIRITUAL EXPLORER.
My family, dogs and I live in what I have concluded is the most beautiful place on earth: Bend, Oregon. We spend our days doing our best to REJECT THE DOMINANT PARADIGM and live a life filled with love and joy rather than accomplishments and possessions.
This was not always the case, and most certainly is not easy. The messages you’ll find shared here springs forth my adventures trying to live a LOVE SPONSORED EXISTENCE. It has required great courage, strength and determination to do this in the face of the never-ending encouragement to do the contrary from the “kill or be killed”, “winner take all” and “might is right” western culture we live in.
My beloved wife, Erin Hitchcock, is one of the best role models in my life for living this love sponsored existence. She lives it every day with everyone she meets, everything she does, and in her work as health coach, food guru and nutritional explorer. You can learn more about her at www.vitamin-love.com.
“Professionally,” I attempt to live my truth as a speaker and writer. This part of my life rose up like a phoenix from the ashes of my shattered ego and self identity, which I unwittingly self destructed when we sold our successful but unfulfilling real estate company and set about not working for a year.
Thinking I would skip off gleefully to enjoy some down time, so some writing and find my next business venture, I instead found myself very nearly committing suicide three days later on Christmas Eve.

Speaking…
In my search to find myself, I discovered a gift hidden deep inside me: public speaking. While most would rather have a root canal that get on a stage with microphone in hand and speak, I… well…. there really is not much that I’d rather do.
It told my best friend the other day that I was pretty sure I enjoyed it as much as sex and snowboarding. He about spit up the beer he was drinking. I was not kidding.
My favorite subjects are spirituality and philosophy.
Who am I? What are we all doing here on this rock, soaring endlessly through the Universe? What the hell is the point of all of this?
Where did I come from? Where will I go when I die? Will I come back and do this all again?

F**k Work
The chronicles of a workaholic’s journey through the valley of the shadow of death: a year of not working.
Not long ago, I abandoned what many would have considered the perfect life. A big, beautiful house in the San Francisco Bay Area, a thriving real estate company, and a tight circle of friends who we partied with regularly. All of it I dropped like a bag of rocks when I realized one very important thing: none of it made me the least bit happy.
So off to Bend, Oregon we moved, trading cars for trees, traffic filled freeways for hiking trails, and an endless social activities for time sitting on rocks in the middle of rivers.
After selling the real estate company, I discovered something very important, and unexpected, about myself: I had no idea who the fuck I was.
It turns out my identity was deeply woven among my California fame and fortune and success. And when I severed that part of my life from my existence, I in essence killed my identity as I knew it.
The result: 3 days after the sale closed, I was deeply depressed and suicidal, and found myself at the rusty railing a catwalk over the icy waters of the Deschutes River, beseeching a higher power to help me find a reason to not jump.
Birthed from this experience, and the year of not working that followed, is this current book writing project.
